Road Food in the Midwest: Hackberry’s Bistro-La Crosse, WI
608.784.5798, ext. 243
Whenever we travel to La Crosse, Wisconsin; we always make it a point to stop at Hackberry’s Bistro.
Hackberry’s is on the second floor above the People’s Food Co-op, located on the corner of 5th Avenue South and Cass Street in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
This unique restaurant appeals to everyone; and is easily accessible by elevator. Families with children are welcome and dining attire is casual. High ceilings complement the large, airy dining room. During the day, large west facing windows, fill the space with natural light.
Hackberry’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of their food is fresh and organic. Tall, dining room windows overlook Cameron Park, in essence, you’re dining in the tops of hackberry trees, hence the name-Hackberry’s Bistro. For the best seating, ask for a table near the window.
Everything on the menu is made from scratch, with fresh, organic produce. I particularly enjoy their salads, which are $9.99:
Pan-roasted Salmon Salad
Shaved fennel, red onion, pepperoncini, pine nuts, and
Grilled Steak Salad
Marinated flank steak, bleu cheese, tomato, red onion, and Dijon vinaigrette
Add hackberry’s wild rice salad made with local wild grains for $2.45-This is a unique salad that is extremely delicious and healthy!
In the evening, the entire restaurant takes on a more romantic and relaxed atmosphere with candlelight, along with upscale and elegant meals to choose from their dinner menu. Last year, my husband surprised me with a lovely anniversary dinner at Hackberry’s. We lingered for hours over the five courses we selected, and dessert was the crowning glory to our romantic evening!
Hackberry’s is our favorite destination on the Great River Road!
